Corporate Covid-19 Testing at The Brook Surgery

The Brook Surgery is a private general practice in North London with over 35 years experience and a reputation for clinical excellence and thoughtful, supportive care.  In the last few weeks as the Covid-19 pandemic has evolved from a distant curiosity abroad to a life-changing international pandemic, we have endeavoured to maintain a service for our patients including a Hot Clinic and access to testing from before lockdown in March 2020.

In response to demand from our private clients, we have been helping their businesses with employee testing, and their return to work strategies.  After positive responses, we have now decided to extend our services to other companies.  All the tests are being done at The Doctors Laboratory, the premier private laboratory in the capital, and are quality controlled and Government approved tests.  The PCR swab results are forwarded to Public Health England and included in their national statistics, while the Abbott IgG antibody test has been internationally approved and will be included in any future immunity passport scheme.

At present we can offer two types of test:

Abbott IgG Antibody Blood Test (the “Did I have it” test)

The body makes antibodies during infection and their presence afterwards both confirms that the patient suffered Covid-19 exposure and has developed some immunity to prevent reinfection.  There is no certainty that Covid-19 immunity is lasting but at the time of writing no patients have suffered reinfection, and in previous epidemics of different Coronavirus infections, antibodies were still present at 36 months. People with IgG antibodies are therefore at very low risk of reinfection and will not become infective to others.   The Abbott IgG antibody test is 98.5% sensitive (false positives) and 100% specific (false negatives).  This test has now been verified by the UK government and may in time be used as proof of immunity.

The test kit contains all the required components for the client to sample their own blood, and safely return the kit to the clinic or post it to the laboratory in Central London.  The test has a 1-2 day turnaround time after arriving at the laboratory.  Public Health England has initiated an investigation into the use of the home sampling kit used for this test on May 26th 2020.  No further test kits will be issued once current stocks are exhausted until after the investigation is complete.  The laboratory tests and reliability data do not differentiate between samples taken via the home sampling kit via a fingerprick test or those taken as a blood test by a clinician, and we are continuing to test in this way until stock is exhausted.

A positive antibody test will not yet give a patient a certificate or passport to be allowed to breach the lockdown rules, and this is our advice as well that of Public Health England.
